Explosion Safety

Explosion Safety: Take no risks in or with your company

Explosion Safety is a difficult subject. The regulations and standards in the area of explosion safety are very comprehensive. The explosion safety regulation is better known as the ATEX Directive or the ATEX regulation. ATEX stands for:
ATmosphères EXplosives.

The ATEX 153 Directive (1999/92/EG) applies to all potentially explosive atmospheres.
The directive has a broad scope and in addition to covering gas explosion hazards also covers dust explosion hazards.
On the basis of this regulation, the employer is required to assess the explosion risk and to improve the safety of the employees in potentially explosive atmospheres.

Machines and electrical equipment must also, at times, be used in areas where there is a risk of explosion. In those cases, the employer must purchase machines and equipment which comply with the ATEX 114 Directive (94/9/EG). According to this regulation, the manufacturer is obligated to design and assemble explosion-safe equipment and safety systems for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.

The consultants at ESV Technisch Adviesbureau BV can assist you in complying with these directives.
With their expertise in this field and, if necessary, in other regulations which may apply, they can help you along the path to correct compliance.

To assess, within the framework of the ATEX 153 Directive (1999/92/EG), whether an explosion risk is present in your company.
This assessment is included in the Occupational Health and Safety Decree and is obligatory for the employer.

ESV Technisch Adviesbureau BV working method for ATEX 153 projects:

  • An inventory is made of all flammable gasses, vapours, fumes and substances present. While making the inventory, a tour of the company is made. During the inventory process, the necessary data related to the substances, work activities etc. will be collected by means of conversations and interviews.
  • A determination is made of where and to what extent explosive atmospheres can arise; this is done on the basis of data such as the quantity of flammable substances, ventilation, work activities and substance properties (flash point, smouldering temperature etc.).
  • An inventory is made of which employees are exposed to the risk.
  • An inventory is made of any possible sources of ignition (globally) (in accordance with
    NEN-EN 1127-1).
  • A determination is made of whether zoning applies and, if so, to which locations (in accordance with NPR 7910-1 or NPR 7910-2).
  • A determination is made of whether detailed risk assessments are needed and, if so, for which locations.
  • We then let you know whether any other information is needed in order to draft an explosion safety document for your company.
