Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EG

The Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EG is also referred to as the PED Directive. PED stands for Pressure Equipment Directive. All pressurized systems are subject to the Pressure Equipment Directive. These systems include pressurized tanks and pipelines in addition to the connectors and fasteners for flanges and fittings. LPG installations, (steam) boilers and compressed air systems with overpressures greater than 0.5 bar are examples of these systems. This directive has consequences, in particular, for the installations used in the food processing, chemical and processing industries. Think, for example, of storage and cooling tanks.

Other examples include cooking boilers and equipment used in food preparation processes.
The PED applies to the design, the manufacturing and the conformity assessment of the pressurized equipment and assemblies with a maximum allowable pressure PS greater than 0.5 bar.

Examples of this are:

Pressure equipment, such as pressurized tanks, pipelines, safety fittings and elements fitted to pressure equipments, such as flanges, couplings, lifting eyes etc.

  • Pressurized tanks with one or more compartments
  • Installation lines and parts of pipe networks, such as hoses, fittings, tubes, expansion joints, pipes etc.
  • Safety fittings such as safety valves, bursting disc safety devices, buckling rods, CSPRS (controlled safety pressure relief systems), pressure, temperature and level switches and SRMCR’s (safety-related measurement, control and regulation devices).
  • Pressurized fittings
  • Assemblies of various pressurized equipment integrated into a functional whole by a manufacturer

As opposed to the Machinery Directive, for example, the CE marking is issued and applied to the individual parts and not to the total installation. This means that in a large installation with many pressurized tanks, each tank and each fitting can have a CE marking. The manufacturers who deliver the parts of these installations are also obligated to deliver these parts with an EC Declaration of Conformity.
