A thorough risk assessment provides insight into the required Performance Level (PL) that a safety solution must meet. This is also referred to as the Performance Level Required (PLr). In the previously mentioned Technical Documentation, you must demonstrate—according to EN‑ISO 13849‑1—through a PL calculation that the chosen safety solution actually meets the specified Performance Level.
From experience, we know that many machine builders still struggle to correctly apply ISO 13849‑1. Despite the use of PLC or PC‑based systems (with or without remote I/O) and the general perception that these systems are reliable, operators may still encounter situations where a machine unexpectedly moves or even restarts—sometimes with serious consequences.
